Hulu gives 10-episode order to ‘Deadbeat,’ from Plan B

Hulu is continuing to expand its original programming slate, announcing on Tuesday that they had purchased 10 episodes of half-hour series “Deadbeat,” a supernatural comedy co-produced by Lionsgate and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.

“Deadbeat” comes from creators Cody Heller and Brett Konner, who previously worked on FX’s “Wilfred.” Set to debut next year, the series focuses on a hapless but gifted male medium who aids New York’s ghosts in settling their unfinished business. Troy Miller (“Flight of the Conchords”) will direct and executive produce all episodes through his Dakota Pictures banner.

“On behalf of the Hulu team, we are very proud to be working with Cody, Brett, Troy and the talented executives of Lionsgate and Plan B on this uniquely funny and imaginative show,” said Charlotte Koh, Hulu’s head of development in a statement. “‘Deadbeat’ is a welcome addition to our growing slate of smart, distinctive original programming.”

With production slated to begin in the fall, “Deadbeat” joins Hulu’s original content slate that includes Seth Meyers’ “The Awesomes” and western comedy “Quick Draw.”

WWII veteran from Gastonia meets actor Brad Pitt

World War II veteran Ray Stewart, 90, of Gastonia recently went to Hollywood where he met with actor Brad Pitt and other cast members in the movie “Fury.” Set in the last days of World War II, the film now in production is about a five-member Sherman tank crew on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. Stewart, who was a gunner on a Sherman tank, and three other veterans of the 2nd Armored Division, were invited by moviemakers to share their World War II experiences with the actors who will portray a tank crew in the movie.

GASTONIA — The name Brad Pitt didn’t mean much to 90-year-old Ray Stewart when he recently got an invitation to meet the superstar in Hollywood.

A World War II tank gunner/driver who fought at the Battle of the Bulge, Stewart and three other veterans were asked to come share their experiences with Pitt and other cast members playing a tank crew in the new war movie “Fury.”

Stewart’s idea of a film star had always been John Wayne. But his grandkids filled him in about Pitt.

“They jumped up and down when they heard I was going,” said Stewart, who lives in Gastonia, west of Charlotte.

According to a Sony Pictures news release, “Fury” is set at the end of World War II as the Allies make their final push in the European Theater. Pitt plays an Army sergeant who commands a Sherman tank and a five-man crew on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. The film is scheduled for release in November 2014.
