Chanel’s new campaign showcases a love story between a man, a woman, and an iconic bag…
A story of hidden desire and falling in love unfurls over a conversation across an intimate table with Penélope Cruz and Brad Pitt in Chanel’s latest campaign.
Expressed as Penélope’s favourite movie of all time, the scene recalls the notable moment from Claude Lelouch’s 1966 film A Man and A Woman, where the iconic Chanel handbag sits amidst an air of love and intrigue.
Presented not as a remake, but rather a homage to the legendary film, the roles are reversed here; while Brad plays a coy Trintignant, a man flushed with love, Penélope reprises the female lead, with an air of self-assurance, as she free falls into her deep desires with her bag by her side.
“Anouk Aimée was a Chanel woman, that character,” Penélope said in behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot. “So it makes total sense that the bag was there in the middle of the table during their conversation in the restaurant.”
A symbol of freedom yet exuding an air of mystery, Chanel’s iconic bag gives meaning as it transforms along with Penelope’s role of a woman in love.
Here, Bazaar Arabia shares a look at Chanel’s latest ad campaign.
Chanel opened its show at Paris Fashion Week with a tribute to a classic of French cinema, tapping Brad Pitt and Penélope Cruz to reenact cult scenes from Claude Lelouch’s 1966 movie “Un homme et une femme” (“A Man and a Woman”).
The Hollywood stars smoulder in the black-and-white footage, reenacting the roles originally played by Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant against the backdrop of the film’s iconic soundtrack by Francis Lai.
In the restaurant scene, however, the gender roles are reversed compared with the original. Model Rianne Van Rompaey, playing the waitress, comes to take their order. “What about the steak?” Pitt asks. “Mmm, yeah, that sounds good,” Cruz replies.
