Behind the Wired shoot

WTJ: How did Brad Pitt become involved ? I presume the fact that he has a new movie ‘Inglourious Basterds’ coming out helped.

SD: In mid-May, we got a call from one of Brad’s reps from Weinstein (yes, in reference to Inglourious Basterds) saying that Brad was interested in collaborating with us on a project. Turns out he had really liked the Mystery Issue (May 2009) we had done with J.J. Abrams and wanted to see if we had any stories that would be relevant. Why yes, we did! So Nancy Miller, our Hollywood editor, replied with word of our gestating etiquette package. We pitched the notion of Brad playing the “bastard/basterd”, clueless about modern etiquette as a way to illustrate a few digital do’s and don’ts.

A couple of days later, I got the call of a lifetime; I was sitting at my desk and his assistant rang and said “I’ve got Brad on the line for you.” And it was really him. Very cool guy. Turns out he’s a huge fan of the magazine and was completely open to the bastard idea. We talked for about 20 minutes, brainstormed a bunch of scenarios and agreed to do a shoot the following week.

Despite the fact that Henry’s travels force them apart with no warning, Clare desperately tries to build a life with her one true love.

Most studios passed on Matthew Vaughn’s “Kick-Ass” at the script stage, but now some seem to want another look at the adaptation of the Mark Millar comicbook.

Vaughn, who co-wrote, directed and produced (along with partners like Brad Pitt), unveiled a few “Kick-Ass” clips at Comic-Con last week, and the fanboys went nuts over what they saw, giving it a standing ovation.

“I was asked to show the footage twice,” Vaughn marveled.

Studios and other distribs will get a peek at the rough cut of “Kick-Ass” today at a private unspooling at the DGA in Hollywood.

Vaughn, who privately funded the pic about teenagers who want to be superheroes, gets why he didn’t initially get a greenlight from U.S. distribs. “The script broke every taboo known to man,” the helmer said, but he “had fun with it.”

More Inglourious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino is bringing his latest movie, “Inglourious Basterds,” to Chicago next month as a fundraiser for the Chicago International Film Festival.

Cinema/Chicago, which presents the festival, will give Tarantino its Career Achievement Award at its 2009 Summer Gala on Aug. 18 at the AMC River East theater, followed by a screening of his comedy-tinged Nazi-hunting adventure film (which opens Aug. 21) and a reception at the Wit Hotel (201 N. State St.). The program will include a montage of the filmmaker’s works — which include “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction” and “Kill Bill” — as well as what’s sure to be an entertainingly off-the-cuff acceptance speech from the fast-talking director.

No, “Inglourious” star Brad Pitt is not slated to appear.

“Tarantino is consistently inventive as a director, writer, producer and actor,” festival founder Michael Kutza said in a statement. “He constantly generates excitement and anticipation with each new film.”
