Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt’s onscreen dynamic in F1 mirrors their real-life bond.
“We knew each other very briefly, and then we have to create this bromance … which, with Brad Pitt, is not that difficult, if you ask me,” the Spanish actor, 56, quipped during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Monday, June 16.
“It’s like, ‘Okay, I get it,’ ” Bardem added of his costar’s appeal, joking of how Pitt, 61, reacted to him, “He had a harder time.”
Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), F1 stars Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a former driver “who returns to Formula 1 at APXGP, a fictional team on the grid,” per a synopsis. He costars alongside Damson Idris, who plays his teammate, and Bardem, who plays, Ruben, the owner of the team Pitt’s character Sonny drives for.

Brad Pitt and Damson Idris hit the track in real race cars to prepare for their work in “F1,” the upcoming Formula One racing movie.
“We ended up driving for about two years. I was told that we drove 6,000 miles in total in these cars,” Pitt told Variety at the “F1” premiere on Monday in New York City. “So, I’m kinda proud of that.”
The high-octane sports drama follows Sonny Hayes (Pitt), a retired Formula One driver who’s drawn back into the world of racing to mentor a hotshot rookie, played by Idris, for the fictional Apex Grand Prix team. The film also stars Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon and Tobias Menzies.
