Brad Pitt Approves Of Charlie Hunnam (As Christian Grey)

The news of Charlie Hunnam’s casting as Christian Grey in the upcoming film adaptation of E L James’ “Fifty Shades of Grey” continues to have Hollywood – and fans – buzzing.

And while the fan debate rages on, as to whether Charlie – perhaps best known for his role as Jackson “Jax” Teller on FX’s “Sons of Anarchy” – is the right choice, at least one fellow big screen leading man is lending Charlie his full support.

“I know Charlie, he’s a great guy!” Brad Pitt beamed to Access Hollywood at the Toronto Film Festival, when asked for his thoughts about the “Fifty Shades” casting news.

“He’s a good egg and one of the guys that are putting story and craft first,” Brad continued of Charlie, who many have said looks a lot like Brad. “I hope good things for him.”

In fact, Brad’s production company Plan B is slated to produce a vampire film “Vlad,” for which Charlie wrote the screenplay.

As for Brad, he was in Toronto promoting his new drama “12 Years A Slave,” in which he plays Samuel Bass – a Canadian abolitionist who helps Solomon Northrup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) gain his freedom after being kidnapped and sold into slavery in New York in 1841.

“It’s an incredible movie. It’s a very special film, it’s a rare film – it’s why we all get into the business,” Brad said of his new film.

While Brad was busy promoting the film in Toronto, Angelina Jolie was in Australia, along with the couple’s six children.

“Yeah, she’s got her hands full,” Brad joked with Access. “I’m actually jealous.”

‘The Machinist’ writer boards Dracula film

Scott Kosar has been brought on to work on the screenplay for Summit Entertainment’s “Vlad.”

Actor Charlie Hunnam (“Sons of Anarchy”) wrote the original script, which takes an action-oriented look at Dracula, or Vlad the Impaler, as a young prince. Music video director and photographer Anthony Mandler recently came aboard to direct the project and will shepherd Kosar’s work on the screenplay.

Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner are producing through their Plan B shingle. Summit president of production Erik Feig and vp production Meredith Milton are overseeing the project. Jeremy Kleiner is shepherding for Plan B.

Charlie Hunnam talks about his screenplay for ‘Vlad’

Yes, Vlad the Impaler, a 15th century badass whose penchant for brutality and fighting at night were meant to strike fear in the heart of the Ottoman Empire and give his outnumbered forces an advantage on their home battlefield, was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. And yes, the Vlad screenplay, written by Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam, will be produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B and Summit Entertainment, the studio behind Twilight. But no, you will not be seeing vampires. In fact, that was a non-negotiable point for Hunnam, who became fascinated with Vlad, a national hero of Romania, when he spent five months traveling the country during downtime filming 2003’s Cold Mountain.

It wasn’t until Hunnam (who’d previously starred in the UK Queer as Folk, 2002’s Nicholas Nickleby, and Fox’s Judd Apatow series Undeclared) became frustrated with the sort of roles he was being offered that he finally sat down three years ago to write his first script. Development has been staggered — interrupted by both the writers’ strike and Hunnam’s casting as Jax on FX’s Anarchy, which just received a third season order — but this week comes news that in-demand music video director Anthony Mandler is in line to helm the film after wowing execs with a reel reminiscent of Zack Snyder’s 300. Here, Hunnam tells us about the film’s plot (he’s the hottest history teacher you’ll ever have) and who he’d love to see cast as Vlad (Colin Farrell or himself?).
