The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Every hot young actress in Hollywood wants to play the lead in Sony Pictures’ The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. But will director David Fincher cast one of them — or go with an unknown? This is the studio’s next 3-film franchise based on Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s bestselling Millennium trilogy. It begins with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (there’s a very well-received Swedish version in theaters right now), and continues with The Girl Who Played With Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest. So what’s described to me as “creme de la creme” of young actresses are calling Sony execs as well as producer Scott Rudin and asking if they “can come in for a meeting” about it.
The problem is that director David Fincher “is not sure if he wants to go with an actress of any note or go with an unknown,” an insider tells me. “David’s process is very specific and private. He’s looking for authenticity and a degree of fierceness and believeability capable of delivering the intensity that the part on the page calls for.” I hear Sony execs think the bestseller itself is such a phenom, and the material so exciting, that the twentysomething female lead doesn’t need a name. On the other hand, they think the male lead does require a star, and the studio is waiting for an answer from Brad Pitt.

Hatfields and McCoys
Brad Pitt is going to be a busy boy for the next year or so. With Terence Malick’s The Tree of Life and baseball flick Moneyball already on his to-do-list, he’s also been linked to feuding-families pic, The Hatfields and McCoys. That’s according to Robert Duvall, anyway.
Speaking to Hollywood Elsewhere during press for Get Low, Duvall revealed that Crazy Heart helmer Scott Cooper had met with Pitt to discuss the project. He went on to claim that Pitt will be playing “the main guy”, while he himself will co-star.
Benjamin Button scribbler Eric Roth has supposedly written a script, while fans of Crazy Heart will be pleased to hear that T Bone Burnett has been approached to do the music.

Brad Pitt Shooting For Gunsmoke Lead?
Despite the fact that Westerns are once more finding it tough to rope in audiences, CBS Films is hoping that an adaptation of long-running TV cowboy series Gunsmoke can overcome that little problem – and the likes of Brad Pitt and Ryan Reynolds are said to be up for the lead role of Marshal Matt Dillon*.
Gunsmoke (which aired as Gun Law some of the time over here) certainly has a history. It began in the early 1950s as a radio serial before transferring to TV in 1955 with James Arness taking over the role of Dillon in a half-hour version that was eventually expanded to an hour. Long considered one of the best US series of all time, it was also the longest running for many years, though the original Law & Order is about to best its season record.

Paramount Pictures has picked up Michael Lewis’ upcoming book “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine.”
According to Variety, Brad Pitt is producing through his Par-based Plan B shingle.
The nonfiction book chronicles the recent free fall of the American economy, and features a large cast of characters.
No cast has been added, and no production date has been set.
