Javier Bardem to ‘Eat’ with Julia Roberts

Javier Bardem is negotiating to star in “Eat, Pray, Love,” the Ryan Murphy-directed adaptation of the Elizabeth Gilbert memoir for Columbia Pictures.Bardem joins Julia Roberts and Richard Jenkins in the cast.

Roberts plays the author, and Bardem will play Felipe, the man Gilbert meets and falls in love with on the final leg of a journey of self-discovery that began with the end of her marriage.

Richard Jenkins plays a Texan whom the heroine befriends at an Indian ashram.

Pic was adapted by Murphy, the “Nip/Tuck” creator who last helmed “Running With Scissors.”

Eat, Pray, Love

Richard Jenkins has signed to star opposite Julia Roberts in “Eat, Pray, Love” for Columbia Pictures. Film, which will be helmed by Ryan Murphy, had been set up at Paramount Pictures but was put in turnaround earlier this year. Based on the international bestseller by Elizabeth Gilbert, story centers on a married woman who embarks on a journey of self-discovery after trying to get pregnant and realizing that she’s not living the life she wants. Murphy adapted the screenplay. Jenkins will play a Texan whom Roberts’ character befriends at an Indian ashram. Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner are producing through their Plan B shingle. Battling Boy

Brad Pitt’s production company picked up rights to the forthcoming graphic novel written and illustrated by Paul Pope in November. The story line follows the son of a god who comes down from the top of a mountain at his father’s urging to rid the giant, continent-sized city of Monstropolis of a plague of beasts. First Second Books will publish the comic in the spring. Paramount execs Eben Davidson and Andrew Calof are overseeing Tse’s adaptation for the studio. Tse, who is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment, co-wrote the recent adaptation of “Watchmen,” which Paramount distributed internationally. The film has grossed $177 million worldwide.
