Brad Pitt Courting David Fincher for ‘World War Z’ Sequel
After losing director J.A. Bayona to the “Jurassic World” universe, Brad Pitt is zeroing in on an old friend for the “World War Z” sequel.
Sources have told Variety that Pitt, along with Paramount and Skydance, is in talks with David Fincher to direct the follow-up to the 2013 smash hit.
Pitt, who’s returning to star in and produce the next “World War Z” installment, recently met with a handful of other directors, but is said to be zeroing in on Fincher for the pic, which is expected to start filming in early 2017.
Skydance and Paramount had no comment on the development.
According to sources, Fincher and Pitt met two weeks ago to discuss the possibility of Fincher boarding the zombie tentpole. The talks were initially lukewarm, but sources now tell Variety that negotiations are much further down the road and that other director currently has an offer.
Toronto: Natalie Portman’s ‘Jackie’ Biopic, ‘Moonlight’ From Brad Pitt’s Plan B Join Lineup
The films will compete in the Platform juried competition.
Natalie Portman’s Jackie biopic and Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, for A24 and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, will compete in the Platform juried competition at next month’s Toronto International Film Festival.
The films will be among 12 indie titles to compete for a $25,000 prize, organizers said Thursday.
Jackie, which will receive a North American premiere in Toronto, also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Greta Gerwig and John Hurt. Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain (No, El Club) directed the pic, his first English-language feature from a 2010 Black List screenplay by Noah Oppenheim.
Moonlight, which is getting an international debut in Toronto, is the lone American entry in the Platform competition and stars singer-songwriter Janelle Monae, James Bond actress Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali.

Why has Netflix quietly moved their much-ballyhooed acquisition of David Michôd’s “War Machine,” a satiric comedy starring Brad Pitt as a general based on Afghan star Stanley McChrystal, back to 2017?
Netflix is making room for another Brad Pitt movie with awards in its sights, they confirmed. Paramount is releasing Bob Zemeckis’s World War II espionage romance “Allied,” starring Pitt and Marion Cotillard, on November 23. Pitt likes this period: he played military men in both Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” and David Ayer’s “Fury.”
Produced by Pitt’s Plan B with Ian Bryce, “War Machine” marks Netflix’s highest-budget movie commitment to date—Ted Sarandos paid a reported premium higher than its $60-million budget because when the online streamer buys all world rights to a property, it’s a flat acquisition. They pay no overages in success.
But clearly, reaching viewers directly through Netflix is the goal for Pitt and his team on “War Machine,” which shot in Abu Dhabi for Kabul. The movie would be costly to market in a challenging environment. And they’re betting on studio-backed “Allied” for the Oscars.
Rod Lurie Post-Civil War Drama ‘Monsters of God’ From Plan B Gets TNT Pilot Order
TNT has given a pilot order to Rod Lurie’s post-Civil War drama Monsters of God, from Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment. The project originally was set up for development at Starz three years ago. About a year ago, Monsters of God was put in turnaround and taken to TNT. The script by Lurie has been in development at the basic cable network ever since, leading to the pilot pickup.
In Monsters of God, savagery and violence are the cornerstones of Colonel “Terrible” Bill Lancaster’s holy war against the Comanche in post-Civil War Texas. Despite the peaceful co-existence between the Comanche and local townspeople, Lancaster sets out on a quest to kill off every single member of the tribe, bringing chaos to the town of Slater. Meanwhile, his wife, Cynthia Lancaster, will let no one get in the way of her obsessive quest to institute her feminist ideals, even if she has to challenge the United States Army and make her own allegiance with the Comanche women. Whether by force or free will, change is coming to Texas, and the escalating insanity will reveal humanity at its most monstrous.
Malick’s “Voyage of Time” to premiere at Venice
Tree of Life helmer Terrence Malick is to premiere his long-awaited documentary Voyage of Time at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival.
The doc will screen in the ‘Venezia 73? international competition at the Italian fest, which runs from August 31 to September 10.
IMAX – one of the doc’s backers – revealed in May that the film will be released on October 7, stirring speculation around either a Venice or Toronto premiere. Voyage of Time has been in development for more than 30 years, and examines the birth and death of the universe and existence of life on Earth.
The film is slated to launch with two versions released simultaneously. A 90-minute version of the film, narrated by Knight of Cups actor Cate Blanchett, will screen at Venice, while Tree of Life actor Brad Pitt narrates the 40-minute Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience.
Teaser Image Provides 1st Look at Bong Joon-ho’s Next Film
A teaser image of Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming film “Okja” was released by U.S. video-streaming provider Netflix on Tuesday. The image features Tilda Swinton and Giancarlo Esposito on location in New York.
Netflix is investing US$50 million into the Korean director’s film, which is being co-produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.
The film follows a story of a little girl named Mija, who risks everything to prevent a multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend named Okja — a massive, genetically modified pig.
Most details are unknown, but Tilda Swinton is reportedly playing a double role in the film, which also stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano and Lily Collins.
“Okja is massive but kind and docile,” Bong said in an interview. “Okja and Mija’s fantastic, adventurous journey breaking through the monstrous world will fascinate viewers.”
The film will be released in 2017 on Netflix and also in a limited theatrical run in the U.S.
Ben Stiller, Brad Pitt, Mike White Team for Comedy ‘Brad’s Status’
Brad Pitt, Ben Stiller and Mike White are teaming up for Brad’s Status, a comedy from Sidney Kimmel Entertainment.
Stiller is in final negotiations to star in the project, which was written by White, the scribe behind School of Rock. White also will direct the movie, which is eyeing a September start.
Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment will produce with SKE and David Bernad.
The comedy centers around Brad, who, despite a good career and happy family, is obsessed with the better fortunes of his old friends from school. While escorting his son on an East Coast tour of colleges, Brad is forced to confront his friends and his feelings of failure — with hilarious and poignant results.
