‘Ad Astra’ first look image finds Brad Pitt traveling through space in search of his missing father

20th Century Fox has unveiled our first look at Brad Pitt in Ad Astra, the upcoming sci-fi thriller from The Lost City of Z director James Gray. Although the film is scheduled to be released in January of next year, some awards season columnists have begun speculating that it could be a surprise, last-minute addition to this year’s race.

The film, which was written by Gray and Ethan Gross, follows space engineer Roy McBride (Pitt) as he travels through the solar system to find his father (Tommy Lee Jones) who left on a one-way mission to the planet of Neptune more than 20 years ago in order to find signs of extra-terrestrial intelligence.

While promoting City of Z last year, Gray said that Ad Astra would resemble Joseph Conrad’s 1899 novella Heart of Darkness, a frame narrative about Charles Marlow’s experience as an ivory transporter down the Congo River in Central Africa.

In addition to starring in the film, Pitt is also producing along with his Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner and RT Features’ Rodrigo Teixeria, Keep Your Head Productions’ Anthony Katagas, and Gray.
