Jolie Describes How She and Pitt Draw from Personal Life in New Movie

For 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt incorporated their real-life chemistry in playing husband-and-wife assassins. Ten years, five children, and one wedding later, Jolie says that the couple are drawing on another real-life element for their next collaboration—marital frustration.

In an interview with the D.G.A., the Oscar winner discusses By the Sea, the drama she wrote and directed “about a deeply unhappy couple on vacation in France who becomes involved with a pair of newlyweds staying at their seaside inn.” After filming the movie in Malta, Jolie reveals what it was like to be directing herself and her husband, who play the unhappy couple, during the drama’s more intense argument scenes.

“I’d be directing myself and him in a scene where we’re having a fight, and I’d be pulling out the parts [of him] that have an aggression toward me or when you’re frustrated with each other—it was very heavy,” says Jolie. “We kept joking that all of the crew felt like they were living in a house where the parents were fighting and you don’t know where to stand or where to look.”
